Breaking Barriers – Samuel Niyomugabo’s Journey as a Digital Champion and Business Coach.
When Samuel speaks, you immediately sense his determination, one that is built on resilience, ambition, and the belief that ability will always outweigh disability.
He is a proud Digital Champion and Business Coach working under DOT Rwanda’s Youth Leadership Program initiative which is being implemented through the Digital Skills for Employability (DSE) Program.
For Samuel, this role is more than a job, it’s a chance to rewrite the narrative for youth with disabilities.
“As a person with visual impairment, working as a Digital Champion at DOT Rwanda is a remarkable opportunity,” he said. “Many organizations don’t give persons with disabilities a fair chance. DOT is different; they make sure we are included.”
When Samuel saw that the application for the Youth Leadership Program guaranteed 6% consideration for persons with disabilities, he knew he had to go for it. Armed with JAWS (Job Access With Speech), a screen reader for visually impaired people he aced the test and earned his spot.
Now, Samuel facilitates training at Kimisagara Youth Friendly Centre, mentoring over 25 young entrepreneurs.
“I help them grow their businesses and use digital tools to advertise and connect with customers,” he explained.
His visual impairment hasn’t been a barrier. DOT ensures training materials are provided in soft copy, which Samuel accesses with JAWS.
“This allows me to perform my tasks just like anyone else,” he said with pride.
Since joining, he has delivered 11 training modules from Introduction to 21st Century Skills to Designing your Business Model. And the benefits have been both personal and professional.
“This opportunity has allowed me to afford things I couldn’t before and support my daily needs,” he shared.
For Samuel, the bigger win is the message it sends, “I want to sincerely thank DOT Rwanda for including persons with disabilities in their programs. It shows the world that talent has no limits.”
From Kimisagara to the rest of Rwanda, Samuel is proving that when youth get opportunities, they don’t just take them they lead, they inspire, and they open doors for others.
