As had been planned,by the DOT team in Kamonyi, on Thursday, February 9th, 2012 a group of 35 community members came together to support the building of the community bank in the centre. Below is a recount of the event and some great pictures.

Over four hours of free labor offered by the DOT beneficiairies in Kamonyi, the foundation of a building that will be used by the community bank Kamonyi SACCO was successfully laid. A team of 35 enthusiastic people turned up for the work and together with a expert builder got the work done.

As early as 8am that morning, we had a team of young men who started collecting the needed tools to get the work done. The sand, stones and cement needed were provided by the Gacurabwenge Sector.  Participants were grouped into groups of those who went to fetch water, those who layout the structures and dug the trachea were the stones would be layed. Each group had a leader i.e. for fetching water, which lead to getting the work done smoothly.

The Local Government was represented by the Ms. Marthe Umugiraneza, the Executive Secretary of Gacurabwenge Sector. DOT Rwanda was represented by Intern Support Assistant, Eric Rukundo. DOT Partners in Kamonyi, the Business Development Centre, were also present to support the initiative.

At the conclusion of the work, the team gathered for remarks from the authorities present.  Ms. Marthe  thanked all the DOT participants for having desired to make such a significant contribution to the Sector project of raising a building for the community bank.  She thanked DOT Rwanda a lot for having initiated the ReachUp! Program which she said was making evident change in the Kamonyi society.

Speaking on behalf of DOT, Mr. Eric appreciated the good collaboration DOT has benefited from it's partners the Business Development Centre and Local Government without which the programs could not advance.

The day this building will be completed, participants who will pass there will always remember how they took part in it. DOT Rwanda will always be remembered in this place!

DOT started operating Kamonyi end of 2011. Through partnership with the MasterCard foundation, the ReachUp! Program is reaching out to unemployed and low skilled youth and women as well as military who previously had not had the opportunity to access training in ICT basics. The program has enhanced ICT and Entrepreneurship skills as well as community participation in development programs

There is already an office of SACCO in Gacurabwenge, but they are using the Adimistration office of the Sector. That's why they had to build a new one which will be dedicated only for banking activities. This was a great achievement for our participants!
